Verba for iPhone/iPod Touch

I had hoped to reveal the Verba app for the iPhone/iPod Touch soon. This was a fun project for me. The app itself is actually finished, see for yourself:

The main search screenDetail View

I cannot, however, actually place this on the iTunes App Store without paying $99 for an iPhone Developer membership. If I could charge a small fee for the app then I might be able to afford it, but since I cannot charge for the app (due to the license of the dictionary data itself) I cannot afford to pay the whole $100 bucks right now (nor am I sure that it’s really worth it).

So, until I get a way to fund this *wink* or meet someone who could put it on the App Store for me (is that legal?), Verba for iPhone will remain on my desktop waiting to fulfill its destiny.

  1. I’ll donate $10.

  2. That’s kind. Between the two of us that makes us about 20% of the way there. It remains to be seen if anyone else is so interested.

  3. So can you ’splain to me in a little more detail what exactly this does?

  4. Sure. It’s quite simple really: it’s the entire Lewis and Short’s A Latin Dictionary on your iPhone. You search for a word and then read the full dictionary entry. When you think about it, it’s amazing that a volume so large can be compressed to fit in a single iPhone/iPod Touch app.

Do you have a specific question?

  5. Pretty neat, that. Is there any chance that this could also be made into a Mac OS X Dictionary.app module?

  6. That would require a lot of reformatting and time I don’t have right now. I have considered it, but I think the regular app suits most needs for the time being.
